Artist Statement

Why I Became A Artist

As a Santera (Saint Maker), I am dedicated to preserving the rich traditions of my Hispanic heritage. My introduction to this art form began in my childhood, during visits to the historic churches of the San Luis Valley. My family were among the early settlers of the Conejos Land Grant, residing in Mogote and Las Mesitas, Colorado. Later, as an adult, after visiting the churches of Chimayo and northern New Mexico, I gained a deeper understanding of the significance of the retablos that had been passed down through our family. In 1991, I began creating retablos for my loved ones, inspired by this connection to our heritage. By 1995, after being admitted into the prestigious Spanish Market, I committed myself to my craft and became a full-time artist.
